Following rules and rituals I create unique compositions.

My music follows certain, partly unconscious rules. Following rules and rituals is typical for autistic people.
My music is linear, made up of individual voices, all are more or less melodic. A kind of polyphony without conscious counterpoint. And my music is not functional harmonic. The individual voices are modal, in church modes.
Another design means the use of retrograde melodies (a melody played from back to front), less often a melodic inversion (mirroring on the horizontal). For me, a role model for such techniques is the composer Josquin Desprez (1450-1521).
Further rules that I unconsciously followed at the beginning: All tracks per album have a different key and all have different tempos. Each album has a different number of tracks. If possible, only one word as track title.
The track titles never have the same first letter per album. The names of the albums are following the alphabet (A, B, C etc.). I look for the titles in different languages: first English, ancient Greek, ancient Hebrew, then came fantasy words (which I invented), French, Latin, ancient Celtic, Proto-Indo-European and Swiss German.
In the early days as a guitarist I played classical pieces in addition to improvisation. But I soon realized that improvisation is my cup of tea.
My electric guitars are the following: Bernasconi Mistral Custom and Steinberger GM4S.
I use branches, leaves, grasses, knives, wrenches, stones, oil tanks, vases and wine glasses to create all kinds of sounds.
Synthesizers are the Korg MS-20 that a friend lent me and Logic Software Synthesizers. My electric bass is a Yamaha RBX4 A2.
The basis for a track can be something “plucked” on the guitar, or a melody, pattern or riff that comes to mind on the guitar or on the computer with midi. It can then develop to the point where hardly anything of the original ideas is left in the final version of the track.
My bass lines are usually created spontaneously, I play the bass to a track and try around until I’m satisfied with the bass line.
I’ve always had a preference for “odd” time signatures, besides 7/8, 5/8 and 5/4 I also use 15/16, 13/16, 11/16 and 11/8 measures. For my fifth album I decided to only use 4/4 and 3/4.
I don’t like one playing technique on the guitar: the strumming of chords, if chords, then I pluck, arpeggiate, or strike briefly.
I record my music at home in my home studio, which I call «Bailenas Productions.” As a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) I mainly use Reaper, for midi things I also use Logic X.
I record electric guitar and bass directly via an audio interface from Focusrite, the effects come mainly from GuitarRig. I also use Reverb, Delay and Equalizer from Reaper or from Logic X.
For Terl Bryant’s drum tracks on my fourth album “Dubnos”, I had to expand my range of effects: EQ, delay, gate, hipass and compressor plug-ins.
I record acoustic instruments with the Studio Projects B1 or Shure SM57 LC microphones. For outdoor recordings I use the Zoom H1 Handy Recorder, with which I recorded branches, leaves, grasses and udu on my third album “Crucial.”
I create the complete mix in Reaper. I also do the mastering in Reaper, with the AUGraphicEQ plug-in from Apple (Logic), the TDR Kotelnikov compressor and the HOFA IQ-Limiter.
I first create the covers of my albums in Gimp as simple digital graphics and then for the print templates in Adobe Illustrator. The pictures / photos are either mine or for my second album “Bailenas” I used a photo by the photographer Igor Glushko, for the fourth album “Dubnos” a picture by the artist Heiko Powell (who has also Asperger’s).

Musik mit autistischer Wahrnehmung
Meine Musik folgt bestimmten, zum Teil unbewussten Regeln. Das befolgen von Regeln und Ritualen ist typisch für Autisten.
Meine Musik ist linear aufgebaut, aus einzelnen Stimmen, die alle mehr oder weniger melodisch sind. Eine Art Polyphonie ohne bewussten Kontrapunkt. Und meine Musik ist nicht funktionsharmonisch. Die einzelnen Stimmen sind modal, in einer Kirchentonart.
Ein weiteres Gestaltungsmittel ist das verwenden von Krebsmelodien (eine Melodie von hinten nach vorne gespielt), seltener gespiegelte oder Umkehrmelodien (Spiegeln an der Horizontalen). Ein Vorbild für solche Techniken ist für mich der Komponist Josquin Desprez (1450-1521).
Weitere Regeln die ich anfangs unbewusst befolgt habe: Pro Album haben alle Tracks eine andere Tonart und alle unterschiedliche Tempi. Jedes Album hat unterschiedlich viele Tracks. Möglichst nur ein Wort als Track Titel. Pro Album haben die Track Titel nie den gleichen Anfangsbuchstaben. Die Namen der Alben folgen dem Alphabet (A, B, C etc.).
Die Titel suche ich in allen möglichen Sprachen: zuerst Englisch, Altgriechisch, Althebräisch, dann kamen Fantasiewörter (die ich erfunden habe), Französisch, Lateinisch, Altkeltisch, Proto-Indoeuropäisch und Schweizerdeutsch dazu.
In den Anfangszeiten als Gitarrist habe ich neben der Improvisation auch klassische Stücke gespielt. Mir wurde aber bald bewusst das mir die Improvisation besser liegt.
Meine E-Gitarren sind Folgende: Bernasconi Mistral Custom und Steinberger GM4S.
Um allerlei Klänge zu erzeugen benutze ich Äste, Blätter, Gräser, Messer, Schraubenschlüssel, Steine, Öltank, Vasen und Weingläser.

Als Grundlage für einen Track kann etwas «Gezupftes» auf der Gitarre dienen, oder eine Melodie, Pattern oder Riff, die mir auf der Gitarre oder am Computer mit Midi einfallen. Das kann sich dann soweit entwickeln das bei der finalen Version des Tracks kaum mehr etwas von den ursprünglichen Ideen vorhanden ist.
Meine Basslinien entstehen meist spontan, ich spiele den Bass zu einem Track und probiere solange herum bis ich mit der Basslinie zufrieden bin.
Ich hatte schon immer eine Vorliebe für «schräge» Taktarten, neben 7/8, 5/8 und 5/4 benutze ich auch 15/16, 13/16, 11/16 und 11/8 Takte. Für mein fünftes Album habe ich mir vorgenommen nur 4/4 und 3/4 zu benutzen.

Zusätzlich verwende ich Reverb, Delay und Equalizer von Reaper oder von Logic X.
Für die Schlagzeug Tracks von Terl Bryant auf meinem vierten Album «Dubnos» musste ich mein Sortiment an benutzten Effekten erweitern: EQ, Delay, Gate, Hipass und Kompressor Plug-Ins.
Akustische Instrumente nehme ich mit den Mikrofonen Studio Projects B1 oder Shure SM57 LC auf. Für Aussenaufnahmen verwende ich den Zoom H1 Handy Recorder, mit dem ich beispielsweise Äste, Blätter, Gräser und Udu auf meinem dritten Album «Crucial» aufgenommen habe.
Den kompletten Mix erstelle ich in Reaper. Das Mastering mache ich ebenfalls in Reaper, mit den Plug-Ins AUGraphicEQ von Apple (Logic), dem Kompressor TDR Kotelnikov und dem HOFA IQ-Limiter.
Die Cover meiner Alben erstelle ich zuerst in Gimp als einfache digitale Grafik und für die Druckvorlagen dann in Adobe Illustrator. Die Bilder/Fotos sind entweder von mir oder für mein zweites Album «Bailenas» verwendete ich ein Foto des Fotografen Igor Glushko, für das vierte Album «Dubnos» ein Bild des Künstlers Heiko Powell (der ebenfalls Asperger Autist ist).
